Georgetown Closes Out Regular Season with 6-0 Win over Villanova
WASHINGTON – Georgetown Head Women’s Soccer Dave Nolan told his team before its game on Friday that they had a chance to make their last regular season game at home something to remember, that they could forge their own bit of history.
The Hoyas wasted little time in doing so, scoring a pair of goals in the first six minutes of the game, with senior forward Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X) and freshman Daphne Corboz (Green brook, N.J./Watching Hills) scoring two goals apiece en route to a 6-0 win over Villanova on Senior Day on Friday afternoon at North Kehoe Field.
“The result certainly was an emphatic statement,” Nolan said. “We talked about coming out fast, which we did. Villanova is a dangerous team. They haven’t been shut out this season and they’re a team that scores goals all the time. I knew we’d score goals, but I knew we’d have to do a good job of stopping their dangerous players. I thought we did that.”
The Hoyas close out the regular season with a 14-5-0 overall and an 8-3-0 mark in the BIG EAST, while Villanova falls to 8-9-0 and 4-7-0. The 14 wins for Georgetown set a school record for wins in the regular season. The Hoyas, who clinched at least a second place finish in the National Division of the BIG EAST Conference, will win the division if Louisville loses to Cincinnati on Saturday.
Trujillo and had two goals and an assist, giving her 11 goals and four assists for 26 points, with 23 of those (10 goals and three assists) coming against BIG EAST opponents. Corboz finished with two goals and redshirt senior midfielder Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair).added two assists, giving her eight goals and 11 assists (29 points) this season.
“The quality of our goals was very good,” Nolan said. “It was just a great Senior Day for these kids. The kids handled it pretty well and that’s what I’d expect from this group. They realize there’s a lot of soccer left to be played. At the end of the season, they’re focused on getting back to the NCAAs and getting to the Final Four of the BIG EAST.”
Georgetown wasted little time in getting on board. After an early chance from Villanova in the second minute went wide, the Hoyas got in position to score off a throw-in from senior forward Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson). The throw-in was headed by sophomore Mary Kroening (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury), but was deflected and there was a scramble in front of the net before senior midfielder Kelly D’Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy) got a foot on it and slid it past Jami Kranich at 3:36.
Two minutes later, the Hoyas struck again. This time it was Trujillo, who took a feed from Wells and chipped a shot from about 20 yards out that sailed over Kranich and bounced on the line and in at 5:40.
The Hoyas added their third goal of the half in the 14th minute. Trujillo played a ball from the midfield to the right and Corboz picked it up in the run of play from about 15 yards out, giving GU a 3-0 lead at 15:38. Georgetown continued to take advantage of chances in the second half, with D’Ambrisi sending a ball from 18 yards out to Trujillo, who blasted a side volley from the right side about six yards out, pushing the lead to 4-0 at 48:57.
In the 61st minute, Wells sent a through ball to Corboz, who met it inside the box and took a wicked shot from 10 yards out, beating Kranich at 60:18. The Hoyas added their final goal in the 85th minute, when sophomore Alexa St. Martin (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) took a shot from the top of the box, closing out the scoring at 84:37.
Georgetown out-shot Villanova 22-6 and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. The defense, led by senior Gabby Miller (Wayne, Pa./Radnor), limited the Wildcats to six shots as the unit posted its eighth shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Hanna (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington) made two saves and improved to 11-4-0 this season.
The 14 wins for the Hoyas set a school record for wins in a regular season, eclipsing the mark of 13 set by the 2007 and 2010 NCAA Tournament teams. “We talked about this before the game,” Nolan said. “Last year’s team made great history, and this year’s team has a chance to make its own great history. By winning our 14th game today, they’ve made their own little bit of history.”
