WASHINGTON  –  Georgetown University Head Women’s Soccer Coach Dave Nolan told his team that once BIG EAST Conference play started, each game would be a challenge and more likely decided by one goal.   The Hoyas found that out quickly on Friday night as the Blue & Gray lost to Seton Hall, 3-2, in overtime at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.

 

The loss ended a three-game win streak for Georgetown, who falls s to 6-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the BIG EAST.  Seton Hall improved to 5-1-2 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.

 

“It was a disappointing loss,” Nolan said.  “We created enough chances to win the game and we had enough quality chances in regulation to win it but you have to give credit to Seton Hall. They have one kid up front who took some chances and scored a couple of goals.  It’s a crapshoot once you get in overtime and we had a couple of balls just before they scored that I thought were going to for us.

 

“I didn’t feel we played as well we can, but we played well enough to win and that’s what was disappointing. We just have to get ready for Rutgers on Sunday.”

 

The teams went into overtime tied at 2-all and Georgetown appeared ready to end the game early in the extra session.  A corner kick in the 92nd minute from redshirt senior midfielder Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) resulted in a pair of shots.  The first, from senior Kelly D’Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy), was blocked, and the ensuing shot from senior forward Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) hit off the crossbar.

 

Seton Hall, however, scored the game-winning goal in the 96th minute when Taylor Wilson found room in the middle of the box, faked a shot with her left foot and then fired a hard shot with her right foot, beating senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Hanna (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington) to the upper right corner.  Wilson, who assisted on the team’s first two goals, scored at 95:56,giving the Pirates the 3-2 win.

 

Georgetown fell behind early, with Katlyn Ritter scoring in the 13th minute to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

 

Sophomore defender Emily Menges (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored the equalizer in the 31st minute on a free kick that sailed over a wall of Seton Hall defenders and into the upper left corner.

 

A goal from Ritter in the 55th minute gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead, but Georgetown came back 14 minutes later and tied the game when Baker flicked the ball past Elizabeth Bond.

 

Georgetown finished the game out-shooting Seton Hall, 21-17, while the Hoyas held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. 

 

The Hoyas return home and play at North Kehoe Field on Sunday, Sept. 19, hosting Rutgers.  Kickoff is slated for noon. 

 

“We can’t afford to look back and guess,” Nolan said.  “We have to get ready for the next game that comes up Sunday with Rutgers. I told the girls after the game that in the BIG EAST, every game is going to be a battle and every game will probably be decided by a small margin.  It’s a matter of who keeps their nerve and who is brave enough to make a key move.  Today, it didn’t go our way.”

 

This will be the 17th all-time meeting between Georgetown and Rutgers, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 12-3-1 advantage in the head-to-head series.  Rutgers has won the last two meetings between the teams and four of the last five overall.  The Hoyas are 2-6-0 all-time at home against the Scarlet Knights.  Georgetown’s last win at North Kehoe Field against RU was a 1-0 decision during the 2008 season.
