Georgia Stats Loses to William & Mary 2-1
ATLANTA – The Georgia State women's soccer dropped a close match to William and Mary Sunday afternoon, losing 2-1.
The Panthers (4-8-1, 1-4 CAA) couldn't come up with the tying goal in the second half, after the Tribe (11-3, 5-0) scored in the 56th minute. The Tribe's Barbara Platenberg had both of William and Mary's goals of the game.
Both teams spent the majority of the first half playing defense. William and Mary did manage two shots on goal, but junior goalkeeper Rebecca Toler saved both of those shots. As the five minute mark approached, both the Panthers and the Tribe kicked their offenses into full gear. Georgia State pushed the ball down the field and junior Alyssia Feronti took a corner kick for the Panthers at 4:56. Feronti launched the ball to right in front of the net. Senior Carly Lafferty got a piece of the ball with her head and sent it into the top left corner of the net.
However, it didn’t take long for the Tribe to respond. William and Mary drove the ball down the field before Cortlyn Bristol shot straight towards Barbara Platenberg, who was on the ground tangled with Toler. While on the ground, Platenberg was able to tap the ball into the net. The first half ended with the teams tied at 1-1.
After William & Mary scored in the 56th minute to go ahead 2-1 in the second half, the Panthers attempted to mount a comeback and even the game up. They had several good looks, but goalkeeper Caroline Casey kept all of Georgia State's three shots out of the net.
The Panthers will have a full week of rest to prepare for James Madison, in their second to last home match. The Panthers will take on James Madison at noon on Sunday, Oct. 14. The match will be Georgia State's senior day, and the Panthers' three seniors will be honored after the match.
