ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Senior midfielder Sarah Gibbons (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) came off the bench to score late in the first half and The University of Scranton women’s soccer team turned in another strong defensive effort in a 1-0 victory over Muhlenberg on Tuesday evening at Varsity Field.

The victory pushed the Royals’ winning streak to four straight while they improved to 4-4-2. Scranton has outscored opponents 9-0 during the winning streak.

Gibbons broke a scoreless tie at the 38:50 mark with her second goal of the season when she slipped a low shot from inside the penalty past the Mules keeper after taking a cross from freshman forward Sarah Andrews (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood). The assist was the second of the season for Andrews.

For Gibbons, it marked her second goal in just three games this season. She now has 12 career goals after scoring eight last year and two in 2010.

Junior goalie Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) made two saves, both in the second half, while picking up her fifth shutout of the season and 15th of her career. Her 15 shutouts are now tied for fifth all-time in University of Scranton history.

Scranton held a 6-4 advantage in shots, marking the 10th time in 10 games the Royals have outshot their opponent. They also held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

For Muhlenberg, which fell to 3-6-1, freshman goalie Francesca Cobuzzi (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) made two saves in the defeat.

Scranton is tentatively set to return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29, when it travels to Farmingdale, N.Y. to take on Farmingdale State at 2:30 p.m. The game is subject to change.
