Glick Leads No. 22 FGCU to Tie Against Washington
PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite playing nearly the final 90 minutes a man down, the No. 22 FGCU men’s soccer team turned in a gutsy performance behind their senior goalkeeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) to earn a 1-1 draw with Pac-12 foe Washington on Sunday afternoon at Merlo Field on the final day of the Nike Invitational.
One of 30 players in Division I up for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, Glick made nine saves on the day, highlighted by a pair of diving stops in the first overtime. The nine saves are the second-best single-game total for Glick and his most since his freshman season (2007).
The 1-1 draw is the second straight for the Eagles, who move to 0-1-2 on the young season. On Friday night, FGCU opened the tournament with a 1-1 tie against host Portland. Washington is now 2-0-1 on the year.
“I’m not pleased with the way we started the game, but I’m pleased with the way we battled,” said head coach Bob Butehorn. “It takes a lot to score the first goal playing a man down and we fought the whole 110 minutes. Adam (Glick) was terrific in goal and his saves in overtime were just tremendous.”
Along with Glick in net, senior Jonathan Koshko (New Port Richey, Fla./Mitchell HS), sophomore Donavan Henry (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas HS) and freshman Frederico Crespo-Pauly (Heredia, Costa Rica/St. Paul College/Universidad Latina) all logged the full 110 minutes on defense to help earn the tie.
Washington took advantage of playing a man up, out-shooting the Eagles 22-9 while holding a 16-2 edge in corner kicks. Glick was more than up for the task, though, turning away three shots in each half as well as the first overtime.
Momentum took a big shift towards the UW side in the 21st minute when junior defender Jelani Smith (Mississauga, Ontario/Rick Hansen Secondary) was whistled for a foul and issued a red card over 40 yards away from goal.
Playing down a man, FGCU was able to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard in the first half and allowed just two shots over the final 25 minutes.
After scoring the equalizer in the 85th minute two nights ago against Portland, freshman Yianni Sarris (Mentor, Ohio/Cleveland Saint Ignatius HS) entered the game in the 62nd minute and immediate provided a spark.
Sarris worked the Eagles into a corner kick by purposely hitting the ball off a UW defender. On the ensuing corner kick, Sarris found his way behind the keeper where his shot was saved, but the rebound was put home by senior Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) to give FGCU a 1-0 lead at the 65:01 mark.
The Huskies had their share of chances to even the score over the next 15 minutes, but were stopped by Glick until they capitalized in the 82nd minute when Dylan Tucker-gangnes headed home a corner kick to make it 1-1.
Washington nearly won the game in regulation when it ran a 2-on-1 break to perfection, but Brent Richards’ shot from 15 yards out was denied by a diving save by Glick with 30 seconds remaining.
The Huskies controlled the pace throughout most of the overtime periods, owning all five shots over the extra 20 minutes. Glick saved his two best saves for last, making a diving stop with his foot six minutes into the extra frame and a diving save to his left with 11 second left on the clock.
FGCU returns to Southwest Florida for its next game when it hosts Atlantic 10 Conference member Rhode Island (1-2) on Thursday, Sept. 8. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
