Graber nets game-winner in 3-2 SMU win
Box Score | GameDay Preview
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — It may have taken a little longer than Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach Pete Watkins had hoped, but the Cardinals finally picked up their first three points of the conference season — thanks to the late-game heroics of Matt Graber (Denver, Colo.).
Graber collected his second goal of the season — this one coming with less than 18 minutes remaining in regulation — as the Cardinals rallied for a 3-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Bethel Saturday afternoon at Ona Orth Field.
Cody Balogh (Batavia, Ill.) scored his first collegiate goal in the early minutes of the first half, but the Royals responded with two goals in a seven-minute span midway through the half to take a 2-1 advantage into the intermission.
SMU's quick-striking offense struck again in the second half, as Midhat Mujic (Rochester, Minn.) recorded his team-leading third goal of the season just three minutes in to knot the game at 2-2 — and set up Graber's late-game heroics.
Christian Van Dam (Linovia, Mich.) made seven saves in goal for the Cardinals, while Chris Scott surrendered three goals on save shots between the pipes for Bethel.
The Cardinals (1-2-0 MIAC, 3-5-0 overall) — who snapped a four-game losing streak with the win — are back in action on Tuesday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., for a 4 p.m. MIAC contest against Gustavus.
