Grant Earns 110th Win as Memphis Beat Missouri State, 1-0
Richie Grant Tied for All-Time Wins Mark at Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis defeated Missouri State, 1-0, at Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Wednesday evening, giving head coach Richie Grant his 110th win.
Head coach Richie Grant, in his 13th season at Memphis, tied Chris Bartels for first as the all-time career leader in wins.
Sophomore forward Mark Sherrod knocked home the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute. Senior Parker Duncan grabbed an errant touch from Missouri State and played it ahead to Sherrod, who made a run past the Bears’ defenders. Sherrod beat the goalkeeper in the one-on-one situation to the lower left corner of the frame.
Sophomore goalkeeper Conor Hurley came up with several huge saves in the first half of the contest. Missouri State made a run past the Memphis defenders, Hurley knocked the shot above the cross bar. Hurley was also able to punch several shots from the Bears away from the goal and out of harm’s way. In all, Hurley came up with a season and career-high six saves.
With the win, Memphis improves to 3-0-0 on the season, its best start since a 4-0-0 start in 2005. Missouri State falls to 0-3-0 on the season.
Coach Grant and the Tigers will head to Madison, Wisc., for the Wisconsin Soccer Classic. The Tigers will face UIC on Friday at 5 P.M. CT, as Richie Grant goes tries for his 111th career-victory.
