Gray Shines as Owls Fly Past Alabama A&M 9-0
August 21, 2012

KENNESAW, Ga. – Freshman forward Danielle Gray (Peachtree City, Ga./McIntosh HS) introduced herself to Owls fans on Sunday, notching three goals and two assists for a team-high eight points as the Kennesaw State soccer team blasted Alabama A&M 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at KSU Stadium.

“I’m very pleased with how they played today,” said Head Coach Rob King. “Obviously, we were able to generate a lot of offense against this team. We were able to possess the ball nicely, had some good finishing and everyone worked hard. Friday night we did a lot of running defensively and we were very disciplined. Today, I thought we were able to control the ball. It was nice to get everyone some playing time and get some goals today.”

KSU put pressure on the Bulldogs from the start with Gray’s first career score coming less than six minutes into the match. Sophomore midfielder Iyani Hughes (Chelsea, Ala./Chelsea HS) found Gray off of a cross from the left wing to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead.

Redshirt-sophomore forward Katrina Frost (Fayetteville, Ga./South Carolina) added to the Owl lead just five minutes later when redshirt-freshman midfielder Heather Joyce (Carrollton, Ga. /Carrollton HS) passed the ball to the Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of Year, who spun around her defender and lifted a shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

Ahead 2-0, KSU settled in and possessed the ball for much of the remaining time in the half. Freshman Hannah Churchill (Briston, England/Filton College) continued the Owl scoring in the 38th minute with her first career collegiate goal, followed by Gray’s second score of the day to lead AAMU 4-0 at halftime.

The Owls sustained their dominance in the second half as sophomore midfielder Julia Nelson tallied her first two scores of the 2012 season, while Hughes also contributed her first goal of the season. Gray and Frost rounded out the Black and Gold scoring as each recorded a goal in the second 45 minutes of play.

KSU outshot the visitors 25-3, with 19 Owl shots on frame. Frost led the way with seven shots and five on goal, while Gray tallied five shots, all of which were on goal. Ana Huertas, Diana Amafoa and Edna Mensah each notched a shot for Alabama A&M.

Kennesaw State earned six corners in the victory, while only surrendering one to AAMU.

In split time between the posts, KSU senior goalkeepers Lauren Roberts (Rome, Ga./Marshall) and Melissa Hutto (Pensacola, Fla./South Alabama) did not record a save, while Linda Aboagye had four saves in the first half for the Bulldogs and Marissa Oehler made six in the second half.
