Green Bay Defeats Cougars in Home Opener
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Despite winning the shots battle, SIUE men's soccer dropped its home opener 1-0 to the Green Bay Phoenix at Korte Stadium Thursday night.
SIUE, 1-1, outshot Green Bay 9-7 but allowed the game's lone goal at 73:32. Tony Walls scored his first of the season off a corner kick from Stuart Grable.
SIUE Head Coach Kevin Kalish said it was not the way the Cougars wanted to start the home part of the schedule.
"I thought we played with a little bit more urgency after the goal was scored," said Kalish. "At the end of the day, we just didn't get it done."
The Cougars picked up two shots each from Matt Polster and Ryan Bauer. Walls was the only player for Green Bay with more than one shot.
Green Bay's Ryan Wehking collected five saves for the victory in goal. Scott Meyer saved three shots for the Cougars.
Kalish and the Cougars must reboot quickly to get ready for a road trip at DePaul. SIUE faces the Blue Demons in Chicago Sunday. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
"It's a little early in the process, and we have a way to go," added Kalish.
