Griffin scores in FMU loss to Ga. Southern
STATESBORO, GA – Georgia Southern University netted three goals in the first half and went on to hand Francis Marion University a 5-1 loss in women’s soccer action on Friday night (Sept. 4).
The Patriots (1-4-0) will quickly turn around to host Stetson University on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
Senior midfielder Shauna Griffin scored her first goal as a Patriot in the 85th minute to prevent the shutout.
After a quiet offensive first half, FMU posted five second-half shots to finish the game with six shots. Junior Kelly Anthony led the Patriots with two shots in the match. Haley Bigler, Arianna Pierner, Kristen Leung and Griffin each posted a shot on goal in the contest.
Between the pipes for Francis Marion, senior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry had 12 saves, one shy of her career high she set last season against Kentucky. She is second on the Division I list for active keepers with 336 saves.
Georgia Southern took 36 shots in the match led by Jennifer Wittick with eight shots. Wittick scored the Golden Eagles’ final goal of the match at the 67-minute mark.
The other goals for the Eagles (1-3-1) came from Angelica Wallerstedt, Paige Hoover, Jessica Scales, and Nora El-Shami. El-Shami also assisted on the Golden Eagles' first two scores.
