Griffs Blank St. Bonaventure, 1-0
Sophomore Denver Spearman scored the lone goal of the contest for the Griffs' winning margin. Senior goalkeeper Kareem Gray earned his third clean sheet of the season, stopping one shot in the victory.
"I felt like we had a lot of good scoring chances in the first half but they kept getting deflected and we couldn't catch a break," said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. "It took a touch of class from Denver Spearman to break the game open, scoring a great individual goal."
Despite a 12-3 shot advantage in the first half, Canisius could not find the early goal. The Griffs hit two posts in the opening 45 minutes of action and had a number of shots blocked by the St. Bonaventure (1-7-0) defense as the teams headed into the intermission scoreless.
Spearman finally got the Griffs on the scoreboard in the 60th minute of play. The sophomore took a pass from senior Regan Steele near midfield. Spearman then dribbled down the field, got around a St. Bonaventure defender and finished his chance in the lower right of the goal from 12 yards out. His third tally of the season was all the offense Canisius would need on the night as the defense finished off the shutout.
The Griffs outshot the Bonnies, 18-8, on the night and had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Abel Bautista recorded six saves for St. Bonaventure.
Canisius wraps up its non-conference season on Sunday afternoon, hosting St. Francis (Pa.). Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 2:30 p.m.
Game Notes: The six non-conference wins for the Griffs are two more than any other Canisius team has recorded since joining the MAAC in 1989 ... Senior Gavin Falconer had his run of recording a point in six-straight games snapped ... Canisius defeated its local rival in back-to-back meetings for the first time since winning three-straight games against St. Bonaventure from 1975 to 1977 ... The Griffs improve to 12-25-7 all-time against the Bonnies with the win.
