Griffs’ Winning Streak Snapped at UNLV
"The credit goes to UNLV for playing well today," said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. "However, we made it very easy for them. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. The only positive to take out of today was that we can't possibly play that bad again."
Senior Gavin Falconer had the lone highlight for the Griffs, netting his team-best seventh goal of the season. The reigning two-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Week, Falconer buried a penalty kick in the game's 20th minute for the 1-0 Canisius advantage.
It was all UNLV, however, following Falconer's goal. The Griffs lead lasted just 60 seconds before Eddie Vega knotted the contest at one. The Rebels added a second first-half goal in the game's 37th minute to take a 2-1 lead into intermission.
UNLV (2-5-1) picked up in the second stanza right where it left off in the first. The Rebels scored goals in the 50th, 59th and 63rd minutes (via penalty kick) to secure the 5-1 victory and end a pair of school-record streaks for the Griffs.
The Rebels finished the contest with a 15-9 advantage in shots, while the Griffs held the edge in corner kicks, 8-4. Senior Kareem Gray stopped three shots for Canisius in net, while Joe Vitale recorded four saves in the winning effort for UNLV.
Canisius looks to get back to it winning ways when it returns home to face local rival St. Bonaventure on Friday night. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.
