Griz win streak snapped in 3-1 loss at UNLV
UNLV extended its winning streak to four matches and ended Montana’s at three with a 3-1 victory over the Griz soccer team Sunday afternoon in the final match of the UNLV Nike Invitational at Las Vegas.
UNLV (5-2-1) scored twice in the match’s first 15 minutes and never gave up the lead.
Sophomore Paytyn Wheeler scored her first goal of the season in the 75th minute to pull Montana (4-4-0) within one, but the Running Rebels answered in the 84th minute to extend their lead back to two.
UNLV came out as the aggressor, taking five shots and two corner kicks before Montana mounted its first threat.
The second of the Running Rebels’ shots opened the scoring when Macy Jo Harrison dribbled her way through the Griz defense and scored inside the right post against senior keeper Kristen Hoon just 8:24 in.
Harrison was involved in UNLV’s second goal as well. She put a corner kick in front of Montana’s net, and Caitlin Allen headed in her second goal of the season at 14:02.
The match remained scoreless the next 60 minutes until the Grizzlies final broke through with Wheeler’s third career goal at 74:27. Wheeler took a pass from sophomore Maddie Simmel and chipped a long shot over UNLV keeper Kylie Wassell, who lost out on her potential fourth shutout of the season.
Wheeler’s goal was only Montana’s second shot of the match, and the Grizzlies were not able to generate another opportunity before Jenn Wolfe scored her seventh goal of the season at 83:39 to put the match out of reach.
Montana was outshot in the match 11-3. It was the first time the Grizzlies have been outshot in four matches. UNLV also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Montana will play at home for the first time this season when the Grizzlies host New Mexico State (1-4-1) Friday at 4 p.m. at South Campus Stadium. It will be Montana’s only match of the week and opens a three-match homestand that continues next week with the start of Big Sky Conference play.
