GSU Drops First Home Match of Season 1-0 to JMU
ATLANTA--The Georgia State men's soccer team dropped its final home match of the season by a 1-0 score to James Madison on Sunday at Panthersville.
It was the first loss at home for the Panthers (10-5-1, 4-4) this season. GSU is 7-1 at Panthersville and is now tied with VCU for sixth in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with three road matches remaining. The Panthers and Rams face off on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Richmond, Va.
JMU (11-2-1, 7-1) senior midfielder Jimmy Simpson headed home the game's only goal off a cross from freshman Jamal Umar in the 69th minute. Umar sent in a high cross from the left that Simpson skied and headed into the right side of the net past a diving Vincent Foermer.
GSU's junior goalkeeper Foermer made one save in the match while JMU's senior goalkeeper Justin Epperson made five stops for the shutout. The Dukes remain in a tie with No. 11-ranked Old Dominion atop the CAA standings.
The Panthers outshot the Dukes 12-10 for the match, but couldn't put one past Epperson. Redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin and sophomore Evan Scott each had game-tying goals fall just wide of the goal mouth in the second half. It's the first time all season that GSU has lost two consecutive matches after a 3-2 loss in overtime on Wednesday at ODU.
The Panthers honored four seniors prior to the match in Lumpkin, forward Jacob Hamilton, midfielder Tim Nixon and defender Christopher Peacos as part of Senior Day ceremony at Panthersville.
Head coach Brett Surrency leads GSU into Fairfax, Va., for a 3 p.m. match against George Mason next Saturday. The matchup between the Patriots (6-6-3, 3-4-1) and Panthers pits two teams within two points of each other that are fighting for one of the final six spots in the CAA Tournament.
