GSU Win Sets Up 5 p.m. Rematch vs. ODU at the CAA Tournament
Harrisonburg, Va.--The resilient Georgia State men's soccer team rides the high of a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament quarterfinal victory into its matchup against the No. 2 seed, Old Dominion, on Friday (5 p.m.).
The highly-anticipated rematch of the two teams has the Panthers (13-6-1) looking to avenge a 3-2 overtime loss in Norfolk, Va. on Oct. 19. GSU trailed for most of the match and yet found a way to rally to score two goals in the final four minutes to tie the Monarchs (11-4-1) at two before falling in the extra period.
Sophomore Stephen McGill, a key part in Thursday night's 2-1 victory over William & Mary, scored a goal and had an assist against Old Dominion in the regular-season tilt. McGill brought the Panthers within one by converting a penalty kick in the 87th minute against ODU before redshirt senior Ayokunle Lumpkin tied it in the 89th minute. Lumpkin headed home a flick from McGill off a throw in from sophomore Michael Nwiloh.
Head coach Brett Surrency and the Panthers haven't blinked when staring down high-pressure situations. They have shown their mettle by battling back five different times this season from one-goal deficits to win four of those games and tie one. The team also hasn't backed down to tough competition by battling some of the highly-ranked teams in the RPI this year. With its win over William & Mary, GSU is now 5-5-1 against teams currently ranked in the top 100 in the national RPI this season.
Old Dominion is the No. 2 seed and had a bye in the first round of the CAA Tournament. In a season that has made history in many different ways, the Panthers yet again have another shot at cementing the 2011 season as one of the better onest in GSU history. Georgia State can become the first team since the 1997 TAAC Championship team to win two postseason matches in one season.
GSU has only allowed 15 goals this season in 20 matches and hasn't allowed more than one goal in the five matches since its 3-2 loss at Old Dominion.
The winner of this matchup advances to the CAA Championship Game to play the winner of the No. 1 seed James Madison vs. No. 4 seed Delaware match at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
