Guhl Scores Twice as Butler Posts 4-3 OT Win
The Bulldogs added some theatrics to end Wednesday night on a high note at the Sellick Bowl, coming away with a 4-3 overtime win over Marshall in a non-conference match-up.
Junior Brandon Guhl scored the second of his two goals in the 100th minute, taking a centering pass from Marco Charalambous and depositing it in the net for the game-winner. With the win, Butler ends a four-match losing streak and improves to 2-5-1 overall.
Butler looked to have the match in hand after freshman Eric Conerty scored the first goal of his Bulldog career in the 84th minute to give Butler a 3-2 advantage. However, Illal Osmanu headed in a game-tying goal with just five seconds remaining in regulation to knot the match and send it to extra time.
The Bulldogs were able to regroup and came away victorious as the first overtime session came to a close.
Butler jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Guhl (28th minute) and Michael Peay (31st minute). Following the intermission, Marshall responded quickly, getting a header from Carlos Diaz-Salcedo to pull within one, and a tally from Gianni Bouzoukis in the 74th minute as he beat Butler keeper Gabriel Gjergji 1v1 after collected a miscue from the Bulldogs.
That scoring set up Conerty’s score, which for almost seven minutes looked to be the game-winner.
Charalambous assisted on three of Butler’s four goals. He becomes the 12th Bulldog in program history to have three assists in one contest in addition to Matt Morgan, who had four helpers against Valparaiso in a 1991 match.
Guhl now has five goals on the season. Butler scored four goals in a match for the first time in more than two years, dating back to a 4-2 win over No. 5 UC-Santa Barbara Sept. 9, 2016.
Wednesday night’s physical match included 31 fouls, including 14 by Marshall in the first half alone, and four yellow cards.
The Bulldogs held a slight 15-14 advantage in shots. Gjergji picked up the win, making three saves on the night.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to New York to match up with St. John’s in a BIG EAST contest Saturday. The 7 p.m. kick will be streamed live on ESPN3. Links are available on the Butler schedule page.
