GW Draws 1-1 With East Carolina
Sep 8, 2013
GREENVILLE, N.C. - In the first ever meeting between the two programs, George Washington women's soccer and East Carolina came to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Sunday afternoon at the ECU Soccer Stadium.
Both the Colonials (2-2-1) and the Pirates (2-2-2) scored second-half goals in the tie, which was the first of the season for the Buff and Blue. GW's offense held a dominating shot advantage as it doubled ECU's shot total, 14-7, and put nine shots on goal, compared to the host's four.
GW led, 6-1, in shots at halftime and 7-2 in the 54th minute of play, but it was ECU which struck first when Kendall Frey took the ball from the end line and scored at the near post.
Colonials' senior Alex Neal registered the equalizer 14:16 later for her first goal of the season as she collected a loose ball inside the box and arched it over Pirates' goalkeeper Saundra Baron's reach.
Despite holding a 9-5 shot advantage in regulation and a 4-2 edge through two overtime periods, GW could not find the back of the net and break the 1-1 tie.
The Colonials held a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks over the Pirates and forced ECU keeper Baron to make eight saves on the day. GW senior goalkeeper Nicole Ulrick set aside three shots in 110 minutes of work.
GW continues its four-game road swing on Thursday, Sept. 12 in Williamsburg, Va., with a 7 p.m. game at William & Mary.
