WASHINGTON - George Washington women's soccer battled Atlantic 10 foe VCU to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The match was the fifth double-overtime contest of the season for the Colonials, who move to 5-5-5 overall and 2-3-2 in Atlantic 10 play. It was also the sixth time this year that GW has held an opponent scoreless, marking the most shutouts in a season since 2009.
The Colonials out-shot the Rams (8-5-3, 3-1-2 A-10), 19-16, on the afternoon to match their season high in attempts and held an 11-2 shot advantage at halftime. Rookie Kate Elson, junior Nicole Belfonti and senior Jane Wallis took four shots apiece while senior Alex Neal and juniorBrooke Bean each took three shots. As a squad GW forced VCU goalkeeper Emma Kruse to make six saves.
Elson nearly put the Colonials on the scoreboard in the 15th minute when her shot from inside the box was blocked by a defender. She collected the rebound and fired again, but this time Kruse leapt to make the save. Wallis and Neal took consecutive shots in the 38th minute but both were stopped by the Rams' backline.
GW held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks over VCU. Additionally, senior goalkeeper Nicole Ulrick set aside six shots for the Buff and Blue.
The Colonials return to the pitch on Friday when they host Delaware State in a non-conference match. Kickoff at GW Soccer Field is slated for 4 p.m.
