GW Women's Soccer Signs Seven for 2015
Seven student-athletes have signed with the George Washington women's soccer team for the 2015-16 season. The signees will play under third-year Head Coach Sarah Barnes.
"We are thrilled for the 2015 signee class to join the GW soccer family!" said Coach Barnes. "There is a lot of talent in this class across all different positions. One of the most impressive characteristics of this group is that they are not only good people, students and soccer players, but also have a strong work ethic and discipline. These attributes will help this class leave their mark on our program and will give them the opportunity to be very competitive from the start."
The Colonials are set to return 24 letterwinners from last season's team.
The new recruits include:
Mia Barreda
Midfield/Defense
Upperville, Va.
Fauquier High School - VSA Heat 96 Blue
5-foot-7
Mia was a four-year starter for Fauquier High School, earning first-team all-district honors in 2013, with a second-team all-region selection. She served as caption of her high school squad and is in line to graduate as valedictorian of her class.
"Mia is a versatile player who has the ability to transition between the back and midfield lines seamlessly," said Coach Barnes. "She's competitive and has a strong defensive presence. Mia is disciplined and hard working, making her a difficult player to beat. We're excited for the opportunity to work with her at GW."
Megan McCormick
Defense
Hockessin, Del.
Alexis I. duPont High School - Delaware Rush 96
5-foot-11
Megan twice earned first team all-conference honors as a key defender for Alexis I. duPont High School while being name to the First-Team All-State Coaches Top 11 list in both 2013 and 2014. The National Honor Society member intends to study speech and hearing sciences while at GW.
"Megan has a lot of potential as a collegiate center back and brings a fantastic level of competitiveness," said Coach Barnes. "She's tall and athletic, making it difficult for players to succeed 1-v-1. Megan works hard and is a feisty defender and we look forward to helping her reach her potential at George Washington."
Jamie Park
Defender/Forward/Midfield
Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Westlake High School - Eagles Club Team
5-foot-5
Jamie served as a solid defender for Westlake High School, earning all-league honors in 2013 and chipping in seven goals and 14 assists during her three-year varsity career. The three-time scholar-athlete helped the Warriors reach the division quarterfinals in 2012 and 2014 and the division semifinals in 2013.
"Jamie has a very good ability to attack from the flank position," said Coach Barnes. "She is a hard working player with the discipline to recover after joining the attack. Jamie has a good technical base that allows her to be creative on the dribble, and we anticipate that she will grow a lot throughout her career as a Colonial."
Sofia Pavon
Midfield/Forward
Chicago, Ill.
Lane Tech High School - F.C. United
5-foot-4
Sofia joins the Colonials after a standout career at Lane Tech High School, earning all-conference, all-state and all-region honors in 2012-14. The intended business major served as team co-captain in 2014 and helped her squad earn a top-20 Chicago Sun-Times area ranking in 2013.
"Sofia is a skillful attacking midfielder who has the ability to beat players off the dribble as well as read play and distribute as defenders commit," said Coach Barnes. "She has the ability to strike the ball with either foot and will be dangerous in front of the goal. We are excited for the chance to help develop Sofia to be a threat at GW on both sides of the ball."
Charley Prevost
Forward
Greenland, NH
Portsmouth High School - Seacoast United
5-foot-8
Charley comes to GW after a stellar career at Portsmouth High School, where she was a four-time all-state selection as well as a career Fosters Dream Team member. As a junior, the National Honor Society member claimed Fosters' Player of the Year award and was selected as Division II's Player of the Year as a senior. The intended Columbia School of Arts and Sciences student will graduate as her high school's all-time leading scorer with 54 goals.
"Charley does a good job of making runs into wide positions where she can run at players and serve dangerous balls into the box," said Coach Barnes. "She brings good pace and athleticism combined with a quality work ethic that will make her a tough attacker for opponents to handle. We are happy for Charley to join the Colonial family and look forward to working with her."
Caitlin Sullivan
Midfield/Forward
Lake Ridge, Va
Woodbridge Senior High School - Prince William Courage 96 Red
5-foot-4
Caitlin helped lead Woodbridge Senior High School to a conference championship and regional semifinal appearance while reaching the state semifinals in 2014. With nine goals and eight assists, the intended international affairs major earned first team all-conference and second team all-region honors that same year.
"Caitlin has a solid technical base that allows her to be an unpredictable attacker who can both take on and distribute to teammates," said Coach Barnes. "A very disciplined player with quickness, Caitlin can compete in the midfield or front line. She'll be a versatile player with a lot of ability to develop throughout her career at George Washington."
Anna Tapen
Goalkeeper
Springfield, Va.
Paul VI Catholic High School - FC Virginia 96
5-foot-8
Anna hails from the DMV area, serving as a three-year varsity player for Paul VI Catholic High School. She had a stellar senior season in goal, recording 167 saves in 16 games to earn second-team all league and All-Met Honorable Mention nods. The intended business major received the Peter T. Menke Scholar Athlete award last fall.
"Anna is a goalkeeper with a good technical foundation and quick reactions to make saves. She comes off her line well to challenge forwards who have penetrated the back line," said Coach Barnes. "As the last player back, she communicates well with her back line and has a good presence in goal. Anna has a lot of potential and we're excited to help her grow at GW."
