Haavik Leads Beavers Past Sun Devils
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Senior Helene Haavik scored two-second half goals to lead Oregon State past Arizona State, 2-0 on Thursday night at Paul Lorenz Field. Haavik's scores were her fourth and fifth of the season and her first in the Pac-12 schedule.
Oregon State (6-8-2, 1-6 Pac-12) recorded 12 shots – nine of them on frame – to lead the match, while ASU finished with 10 shots and four on goal. Junior Bella Geist recorded her second shutout of the season and added to her save total with four rejections.
Arizona State (6-7-2, 1-5-1 Pac-12) did not record a corner kick in the match, while OSU dominated with five. Megan Delaney noted seven saves and suffered her fourth loss for ASU.
Both teams fired four shots in the first half, but failed to find the back of the net to close the first half scoreless.
Following the break, both teams vied for the lead, but it wasn't until OSU's Haavik got a pass from junior Emma Jones in the box and sent it home to break the drought and give the Beavers a 1-0 lead. But the senior wasn't done, four minutes later she received a pass up the middle of the field from junior Nikki Faris and scored again to push OSU's lead to 2-0 with less than seven minutes remaining.
Oregon State held off any Sun Devil attack in the final minutes to secure the win and to record its first victory in the Pac-12 schedule.
"It's obviously great to get the first conference win," said head coach Linus Rhode. "I'm super happy for the girls, I felt like tonight we deserved it. We had a tough first streak of games and I have to give the girls credit for keeping their confidence and believing after going through it."
Oregon State will stay at home this weekend and close its home schedule, facing Arizona on Sunday starting at 1 p.m., at Paul Lorenz Field.
