Hamilton plays Williams to scoreless tie
Liza Gergenti '14 recorded her third shutout in four games as Hamilton College and Williams College played to a 0-0 tie in a NESCAC game at Hamilton’s Love Field on Oct. 2.
Gergenti made five saves for her 12th career shutout, including four stops in the second half. Laura Wann ’13 and Hannah Van Wetter ’15 combined to make five saves for the Ephs. Wann started and Van Wetter relieved her at the half and played the final 65 minutes.
Hamilton (6-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 NESCAC) had multiple opportunities to take the lead in the first half. In the 10th minute, Halle Becker ’15 hammered a shot from just outside the box that sailed by the upper right corner of the net. Ten minutes later, a high, hard shot by Rebecca Rees ’16 was punched away by a leaping Wann. The Continentals held a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half.
Rees almost gave Hamilton the lead again in the 60th minute when her shot from about 25 yards out banged off the left post. Lauren Brady ’14 corralled the rebound, but her shot was caught by Van Wetter.
The Ephs (5-2-1, 4-0-1) controlled possession for the final minutes of the second half. Hayley Cook ’14 and Chelsea Davies ’13 put shots on goal but Gergenti made the saves to send the game to overtime.
Hamilton was credited with three shots in the overtime periods but couldn’t capitalize. In the first sudden-victory overtime, Becker’s shot went wide, missing the upper left corner this time. The Continentals finished with a 21-14 shot advantage, and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Both teams were listed as receiving votes in the Division III Top 25 coaches poll. The all-time series is tied at 1-1-2, and this was the first time the teams played at Love Field.
Hamilton travels to nationally ranked No. 7 Middlebury College for another NESCAC game on Saturday, Oct. 6. Williams stays on the road as they travel to No. 5 Amherst College on Saturday.
