Harris’ PK in OT wins season finale for FMU
CHARLESTON, SC – Junior forward Chanel Harris converted a penalty kick 5:27 into the first overtime session to hand Francis Marion University a 4-3 victory over The Citadel, Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 30) in the season finale for each of the women’s soccer squads.
Francis Marion picks ups its second win in its last four outings. Six of the team’s final seven matches were decided by one goal, with three going to overtime.
The winning score came after a loose ball in the Bulldog penalty area resulted in a foul called on one of The Citadel defenders. Harris was successful on the ensuing penalty attempt for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
The Citadel (5-11-2) took a 1-0 lead early in the first half, but FMU freshman Tori Whigham knotted the score in the 40th minute when she got behind the Bulldog defense and scored into the right corner of the goal. Freshman Kelly Anthony assisted on the goal.
The Bulldogs retook a one-goal advantage only 2:24 into the second stanza, but again Whigham scored an equalizing tally. This score came when a pass deflected off Bulldog goalkeeper Sam Millspaugh and landed at the feet of Whigham who found the back of the netting at 51:29. Whigham came into the match with only one goal this season, but improved on that total immensely on Wednesday.
For the third time in the contest, The Citadel took the advantage when Lea Raedle scored in the 74th minute off an assist from Nicole Levermann. Patriot junior forward Elizabeth Asare forced overtime when she shot and scored from the middle of the 18-yard box at the 78:40 mark.
Both teams registered 21 shots and the Patriots held a narrow 8-7 advantage in corner kicks.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry posted nine saves, while Millspaugh had six.
Two Patriot seniors appeared in their final match for the Red, White, and Blue: midfielders Jordan Allen and Yasmin Bunter.
