Hartwick Drops 1-0 Decision at UMass Lowell
LOWELL, MA – Host UMass Lowell snapped the Hartwick Hawks’ five-game unbeaten streak on Friday night with a 1-0 shutout victory. The Hawks trailed at the half and out-shot the Riverhawks 12-4 in the second half but couldn’t push across the tying goal in the loss.
UMass Lowell had the better of the opening half, as the Riverhawks out-shot the Hawks by a 10-3 margin. The game’s only goal game in the 21st minute. Guilherme Rodrigues play a ball to the top of the Hartwick box to Wuillito Fernandes. He had to time to fire past Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) for the 1-0 lead.
“The first half looked like we were still getting the bus trip out of us,” said ’Wick head coach John Scott. “The way we played allowed UMass Lowell to get ahead. The second half was much more like us.”
The Hawks had the majority of possession in the second half. The Hawks fired eight shots on the Riverhawks’ goal in the 45 minutes but couldn’t even the match. Jamie O’Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk) had three efforts on frame but none could beat UMass Lowell keeper Austin Kroll.
“One shot in particular looked like Jamie had leveled the scoring,” added Scott. “He pulled three saves out of the keeper tonight.”
The Hawks slip to 3-2-2 overall on the year. UMass Lowell improves to 4-3.
Wilson ended the night with six saves for the Hawks. Kroll finished with nine saves for the Riverhawks.
Hartwick returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 23 at home against Cornell.
