Hartwick Settles For 0-0 Draw With App State
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick’s men’s soccer team dominated the overtime proceedings but couldn’t come away with the game-winner, instead securing a 0-0 draw with visiting Appalachian State Saturday on Elmore in a Sun Belt Conference clash.
The result snaps the Hawks’ 13-game winning streak against Sun Belt opposition dating back to the 2014 season but extends their unbeaten string to 14 games (13-0-1). The Hawks are currently tied atop the league standings with the Mountaineers pending the results of the Georgia Southern-Coastal Carolina game tonight. The Hawks are now unbeaten in their last nine contests (6-0-3).
Hartwick had two golden opportunities to put the game away in the extra periods. Just one minute into the first overtime, Cameron Paton (Edinburgh, Scotland/The Royal HS) had a shot in the Mountaineer box that had keeper Jake Agnew going to wrong way. Agnew, however, extended his foot to get a piece of the shot to miraculously keep the game level.
Twenty-eight seconds into the second overtime, a short pass from Mike Rood (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley) into the box to an open Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) left him alone with Agnew. Berry got under his shot, however, and pushed it high up over the bar.
The Hawks held a 7-1 edge in shots in the two overtimes alone. They finished the match with a 17-10 edge in shots.
Appalachian State had the best chance in the early stages of the contest. Stephen Chapman got the ball into the box and had a clear shot on goal but he rifled the ball high of the ’Wick frame 10 minutes in.
Marcus Nordgard (Copenhagen, Denmark/Oeregaard Gymnasium) had Hartwick’s first chance on a long shot from the left side of the Mountaineer goal which forced a tipped save up over the crossbar from Agnew. Three minutes later, a header from Berry off a Nordgard service went just wide. Kyle Honor (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) also had an opportunity from Berry with 18 minutes left in the half that also missed the target.
Kane O’Neill (Lochwinnoch, Scotland/Gryffe HS) fired a shot which forced a big save from Agnew two and a half minutes into the second half for the Hawks. Berry put another shot just wide four minutes later.
Chapman had another good look for App State with 33 minutes remaining in regulation but it his effort was off-target.
Agnew would end the contest with eight stops to earn the clean sheet for the Mountaineers. He had four saves in the overtimes on Paton’s effort and Hamish Ritchie’s (Aboyne, Scotland/Aboyne Academy) volley from distance. He stopped another pair from Berry and Honor in the second extra period.
Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) made two saves for the Hawks, including a big one in the first overtime on Cooper Coughlin’s shot from in close, to get the clean sheet for Hartwick.
The tie snaps the Hawks’ three-game win streak against the Mountaineers. They are 3-0-2 in their last five against them.
Hartwick next plays on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference meeting at Colgate University. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
