Hartwick's Season Comes to an End
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick needed a win to keep its season alive on Saturday, but a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Stevens Institute of Technology would finish the Hawks’ season at 7-9-1.
The Hawks would have been postseason-eligible with a victory over the Ducks. In addition, a win and a Houghton win over St. John Fisher later in the day would have put ’Wick into the Empire 8 playoffs. The Highlanders would do their part, defeating the Cardinals 4-1, but the door was already closed with the Ducks’ victory today on Elmore.
Hartwick started the game with two of the first three shots inside of 10 minutes in the first half. Nicolette Wilson (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) and Kristen McKasty (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) each put shots on target for ’Wick with Ithaca’s Lindsay Mahnken making saves on both.
The half would end in a 0-0 deadlock with the Ducks holding an 8-2 edge in shots. Senior goalkeeper Annie Millar (Ilion, NY/Ilion) made three saves in the first half for the Hawks.
Early in the second half, the Ducks nearly broke through as Raba Nassif struck the ’Wick crossbar with a shot. Less than five minutes later, however, Stevens would make good on another chance as Georgia Johnson scored on a shot which beat Millar high into the top corner for a 1-0 Ducks’ advantage with 35 minutes remaining. Ann Heine earned the assist on the play.
Ashley Connolly (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) nearly tied it for the Hawks ten minutes after the goal was scored. After dribbling through three Stevens’ defenders on the right side. she sent a high shot over Mahnken from a tough angle. It sailed just over the crossbar.
Connolly would registered another shot which was saved in the 83rd minute. It would mark the Hawks’ final shot in the defeat.
Millar, playing in her final game, made six saves. Today was her 24th appearance in two seasons. Kylie Thayer (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) also suited up for the last time for Hartwick. She ends her career 10th in points, 3rd in assists, and is tied for the single-season record in assists, which she accomplished this season.
