Haverford blanks Rutgers-Camden, 3-0, in consolation game
HAVERFORD, Penn. (September 4, 2011) – The Haverford College women’s soccer team turned the Rutgers-Camden goal into a shooting gallery in the consolation game of the Fords’ own 2011 Kick-Off Tournament here Sunday afternoon.
After being held to a scoreless deadlock at halftime despite a commanding advantage in shots, Haverford finally broke through in the final 45 minutes on its way to a 3-0 victory over the Scarlet Raptors.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 0-2-1, while Haverford improves to 1-0-1.
In the championship game, Arcadia University blanked Wilkes University, 4-0.
Rutgers-Camden was out-shot, 17-1, in a scoreless opening half, forcing sophomore goalie Leighanna Milby (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional) to make nine saves in the first 45 minutes. By contrast, Haverford freshman keeper Robin Chernow (Chester, NJ/West Morris Mendham) didn’t need to make any saves as the lone shot the Raptors managed in the opening half was one by junior midfielder Jennifer Longley (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro).
Haverford senior midfielder Katie Van Aken (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) scored the game’s first goal at 57:25, assisted by sophomore forward Meg Boyer (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron), and the Fords added an insurance goal slightly over one minute later. Junior midfielder Sarah Hoffman (Middletown, MD/Gettsburg, PA) scored at 58:31 to make it a 2-0 game.
The Fords added a third goal at 70:37 when senior midfielder Sarah Andrade (Wyoming, DE/Caesar Rodney) scored off a feed from freshman back Phoebe Miller (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley Carroll).
For the game, the Fords out-shot the Lady Raptors, 32-3. Milby finished with 13 saves for the Raptors, while Chernow had two. Both of her saves came on second-half shots by Raptor freshman Rachel Sindoni (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East).
Haverford also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Scarlet Raptors are idle until Sept. 14 when they play a 7 p.m. game at Widener University.
