Haverford Rallies to Take Season Opener
MADISON, N.J. (August 30, 2013) – The Drew men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 loss to Haverford College (1-0) today in the first round of the 30th Annual Drew Men's Soccer Fall Festival. The Fords scored the game's final three goals to hand the Rangers their first loss of the season.
Junior Tommy Tolve (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) provided the offense for the Rangers in the tournament nightcap. The forward notched the team's first goal of the season after being awarded a penalty shot just 33 seconds into the contest. He converted his second career PK to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. In the eighth minute, Tolve put the Rangers up by two after a feed from senior Matthew Gragnano (Hazlet, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy).
That would be all the offensive fireworks of the night for the Rangers as the Fords were able to create multiple chances on their attacking end. Haverford unleashed a total of 24 shots compared to just nine by the Rangers.
The Fords pulled within a goal when Sam Yarosh collected a blocked shot in the box and beat Drew goalkeeper Michael Reyes (Delran, N.J./Delran) to make the score 2-1 in the 16th minute. The equalizer came off the foot of Ford Bohrmann with a little under 20 minutes to play in the first half.
The game-winner was recorded in the second half with 11:14 seconds remaining when Bohrmann carried the ball through the box, avoided a sliding Drew defender, and beat Reyes to the near-right post to make the score 3-2.
Reyes played all 90 minutes for the Rangers and was kept busy by the attacking Fords. The junior made a career-high nine saves in a losing effort. Haverford keeper, Nick Kahn, was credited with the win and made two saves on the night.
Earlier in the day, Johns Hopkins and SUNY Geneseo played to a 2-2 tie. A win by the Fords tomorrow against SUNY Geneseo will ensure Haverford with their first ever Fall Fest Crown in their first appearance since 1994.
The Rangers will be back on the field tomorrow evening in the Fall Fest finale against Johns Hopkins at 5:30 p.m.
