Hawks Edge Saints
Jamie O’Grady scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to lift Hartwick to a 2-1 win over Siena Soccer in Oneonta, New York. Senior striker Alexander Tejera converted a penalty kick with 2:31 remaining for the Saints to provide the final margin.
An evenly played match saw Hartwick (4-3) hold a slight 11-10 edge in shots, while both teams attempted seven corners. But following a scoreless first half, the Hawks scored twice in the final stanza to capture their fourth straight win.
Johnny McBeth opened the scoring in the 61st minute for Hartwick, while O’Grady added what would prove to be a key insurance tally with 8:57 left.
Siena (1-3-3) was awarded a penalty kick following a foul in box in the 87th minute, and Tejera converted for the sixth time in seven career tries. Tejera’s 19th career goal moves him into a three-way tie for seventh place on the program’s all-time list, while his 48 points now places him in sole possession of eighth.
The Saints chased the potential tying goal in the waning moments but couldn’t break through as the match concluded in regulation, snapping a program record streak of eight consecutive overtime matches for Siena dating back to last season.
Senior goalkeeper Aleksa Radosavljevic made four saves for the Saints, while his opposite number Lenny Wilson stopped seven shots to earn the win in goal for the Hawks.
Siena wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule Friday with a 6 p.m. kickoff at LIU Brooklyn.
