HAWKS FALL IN SEASON OPENER AT MIAMI
CORAL GABLES, FLA. - Monmouth University opened its 2011 campaign with a 3-0 loss at the University of Miami on Sunday evening at Cobb Stadium. The Hawks (0-1) were outshot 11-7 by the Atlantic Coast Conference's Hurricanes, who improve to 1-1 on the year.
"We faced some adversity early on in this game," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "We need to respond in a more positive way the next time out."
Miami, which fell to No. 8 Florida in its season-opener, grabbed a 1-0 edge in the 13th minute when Kate Howarth connected on a sliding shot passed a diving Ally Mancino. The Canes added goals by Fatima Nasser in the 75th minute, and a second by Howarth in the 84th minute to account for the tally.
Mancino, in her first match in goal for the Hawks, faced 11 shots, making three saves.
Monmouth, which connected on seven shots, got three attempts from Jennie Vartebedian, and a pair each from Dana Costello and Claudia Vazquez.
Monmouth returns to action on Thursday night, when the Hawks host Seton Hall in the first-ever night game on The Great Lawn. Monmouth, which installed brand-new lighting on its home pitch, will host the Pirates at 7 p.m.
