Hawks Fall to Bryant 4-2
SMITHFIELD, RI – Hartwick surrendered four goals, including three in the first half, as host Bryant University defeated the Hawks by a final score of 4-2 on Sunday. ’Wick falls to 0-6-3 overall with the loss. The Bulldogs improve to 4-4-1.
The hosts got an early goal less than five minutes into the contest. An aerial ball into the Hartwick box was headed down by Brett Larocque. Jake Lamar ran onto the ball and scored to the near post for the 1-0 Bulldog advantage.
The game remained a one-goal game for nearly 30 minutes until a Larocque tally in the 34th minute. Marco Addonizio crossed a ball in front to Laroucque who found the net on a near-post header for a 2-0 edge.
Less than six minutes later the Bulldogs got a third goal. Following a throw-in, a deflection fell to Addonizio. He sent his shot from eight yards out just inside the far post to beat Hartwick keeper Tom Buckner (Oxford, England/Henley College).
Hartwick responded just before halftime to pull within two. Marc Russell’s (Glasgow, Scotland/Woodfarm) pass sent in Mike Rood (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley) alone with Bulldog goalkeeper Chris Knaub. Rood would beat Knaub with a low shot to his left leaving him no chance and the Hawks entered halftime down 3-1.
Early in the second half, the Hawks made it a one-goal game on a Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) individual effort. He beat a defender in the box and finished near-post past Knaub for his first career goal making the score 3-2.
It would be as close as the Hawks would get as Larocque picked up his second tally of the day in the 64th minute. He received a pass, made a maneuver past a Hartwick defender, and finished from just inside the box to cap a five-point day.
The Hawks had two more shots on target from Berry but both were stopped by Knaub, who ended the afternoon with five saves. Buckner finished with two saves.
Hartwick opens the Sun Belt Conference era next Friday during True Blue Weekend. The Hawks host Appalachian State on Elmore Field at 7 p.m.
