HAWKS TOP MARIST 1-0 ON SENIOR NIGHT
October 19, 2013
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team pushed its unbeaten streak to nine matches behind its 1-0 victory over Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action on Saturday night on The Great Lawn. Monmouth, which got the game-winner from freshman Erica Murphy (Millstone Township, N.J./Pennington Prep) in the 33rd minute, improves to 13-1-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league play.
"It was a terrific night for our seniors," stated head coach Krissy Turner, who has guided the Hawks to at least 13 wins in a season for the fourth time. "It was an excellent performance from start to finish."
With the win, the Hawks finished their home slate with a perfect 9-0 record in 2013, marking the sixth time in program history Monmouth went undefeated at home.
Turner added, "To be undefeated at home is an awesome accomplishment. I credit our players for having the discipline to maintain the home field advantage on The Great Lawn, as well as our grounds crew for doing a fantastic job of keeping the field in pristine condition."
Just over two minutes after being brought on as a substitute, Murphy one-timed a low-lined corner kick service from senior Dana Costello (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) into the netting for the only score of the game. While the goal was the first of Murphy's career, Costello added her 26th career assist, the third-highest total in program history.
The Blue & White, which outshot the Red Foxes 20-5 overall, including 9-1 in the first half, posted its 11th team shutout of the season, while fifth-year senior goalkeeper Ashley Lewis (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) registered her 10th solo clean sheet, while making a pair of saves.
Marist goalkeeper Andrea Wicks made seven stops (two off her career high) in net for the Red Foxes, who fall to 8-8-2 overall and 6-3-0 in the MAAC.
Prior to the game, Monmouth honored its senior class of Lewis, Alexandra Baca, Monique Plescia, Tina Antzoulatos, Karly Tolentino and Costello, who have been a part of 44 victories, and a combined 26-8-4 record in conference play to-date.
Monmouth, which has six shutouts in league play, returns to action on Wednesday, October 23, when the Hawks travel to Jersey City to face Saint Peter's in MAAC action at 3:00 p.m.
