HC Men's Soccer Unites For 1-0 Win Over American On Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior captain Jordan Michael (Burnaby, British Columbia) boosted the Holy Cross men’s soccer team to 1-0 victory over American with a game-winning assist to sophomore Tommy Uttaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the final game of the 2011 season at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the final, the Crusaders complete the season with a record of2-13-2 (1-6-0 Patriot League) while the Eagles move to7-11-1 (5-1-0 PL). Uttaro tallied his third goal of the season while Michael finishes his career with four assists.
The teams played a scoreless first half as the Crusaders put five shots on-goal, taking eight shots total in the first 45 minutes of action. Sophomore Joshua Cintas (San Diego, Calif.) put three shots on-goal, including a shot that was just tipped out of the net by American goalkeeper Matt Makowski. American quickly put two shots on-goal in the first five minutes of the second half as freshman netminder Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) collected his first save in the game. Uttaro then made his first shot of the game count at 60:03, scoring on a diving header inside the box. Michael placed the ball from the right side, picking up the assist as Holy Cross went ahead 1-0.
American would continue to outshoot the Crusaders in the second half, but strong defensive efforts kept the Eagles from tying the game. The Eagles were able to get one last shot off in the final minute, but it sailed high as Holy Cross came away with the 1-0 victory on Senior Day.
With the final, Thompson picks up his second shut out of the season and the win, finishing with a2-7-2record. American’s goalkeeper, Makowski, finished the game with five saves and collects a record of4-9-1. The Eagles totaled 11 shots, eight in the second half, while the Crusaders had 10 total shooting opportunities. Cintas finished with a team-high four shots taken.
Holy Cross has now completed its 2011 slate. All-Patriot League honors and awards will be handed out next week.
