Heidelberg battles Wooster & weather to draw
BOX SCORE
WOOSTER, Ohio – The box score says that the Heidelberg University men's soccer team and the College of Wooster battled to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night. A more accurate game synopsis might state that Heidelberg and Wooster battled the wind and rain on Wednesday night, and the game happened to finish in a 1-1 tie.
Rain and wind made the artificial turf of Wooster's John P. Papp Stadium even quicker, which seemed to rattle the Student Princes. Wooster struck early, with Matthew Kelly putting in a goal in the second minute.
Heidelberg (2-1-2) found the equalizer in the 14th minute. Kurt Wilhelm took a through ball from Hamid Shariff, took a touch and slipped a shot to the left of Wooster's Alex Molinari and inside the post. It was Wilhelm's third goal and Shariff's third assist of the season.
"We went to sleep early and paid the price with a sloppy goal against," said Heidelberg head coach Dr. Brian Haley, in his 26th season. "I thought we recovered well with a well taken goal on a through ball for Kurt."
Heidelberg and Wooster (3-1-1) each took 16 shots. Alexis Mendoza and Chris Koczak had six shots apiece.
"We played much better in the second half, creating some good chances that on other days we make," said Haley.
Matthew Stevens finished with five saves in goal for the Tricolor.
The Student Princes will return to action on Saturday. Their match at Hiram College is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
