Henry Apaloo Joins FGCU Men's Soccer
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Following a 12-year career as both a player and a coach at Division-II Barry University in Miami Shores, Henry Apaloo has joined the FGCU men's soccer program as an assistant coach.
Apaloo (Pronounced APP-uh-LUE) was a four-year letterwinner with Barry from 2004-08, served as a graduate assistant coach for the team from 2008-10 and has spent the past six years as an assistant coach. As a coach with the Buccaneers, Apaloo helped guide the program to two NCAA Tournament appearances (2009, 2013), and produce nine all-region players and five all-Americans.
"I would like to thank head men's soccer coach Bob Butehorn and his staff, as well as Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh and the rest of the hiring committee for allowing me to be part of this great University and athletics program," said Apaloo. "I am very excited for this opportunity to join the FGCU family, and I look forward to contributing to the continued success of the men's soccer program.
"I also want to thank Barry University HPLS (Human Performance and Leisure Sciences) Dean Dr. Kluka, Athletic Director Mike Covone and men's soccer head coach Steve McCrath for their support, guidance and education during my time there," Apaloo continued. "I very much enjoyed my time at Barry University, and I was able to grow as a coach and person."
The first full-time assistant coach in Barry men's soccer history, Apaloo helped the Bucs to winning seasons in six of his eight years on the sidelines, including double-digit wins in four campaigns. In addition claiming the Sunshine State Conference regular-season championship in 2010, Barry won the SSC Tournament crown in 2009 and 2013.
"Henry will be a great fit for our program," stated Butehorn. "He is an established assistant coach at the D-II level, and I'm looking forward to him joining our team."
Apaloo fills a spot on Butehorn's staff following the departure of Phil Boerger to Toronto FC earlier this spring. Boerger primarily worked with the goalkeepers, a position that will now be overseen by Eduardo Villarreal as Apaloo and rising third-year assistant coach Joe Dincecco will assist with recruiting, scouting and player development.
As a player with the Buccaneers, Apaloo led the team in points as a junior (29) and senior (19), scoring 11 goals and distributing seven assists in 2006 and netting seven goals with five helpers in 2007. He served as the team captain for three out of his four years with the Buccaneers.
Apaloo was a three-time All-SSC selection and the first-ever Buccaneer selected to the Daktronics All-South Region Team. During his junior year, Apaloo was named to the SSC First Team, NSCAA All-Region First Team and the aforementioned Daktronics All-Region First Team. He closed out his career as an offensive standout, earning 68 points on 23 goals and 22 assists, while posting seven game-winning goals. He ranks in the top 10 in program history in nine offensive statistical categories, including points, goals, assists and game-winning goals.
A native of Blackburn, England, Apaloo came up through the Premier League Academy system, having spells at Blackburn Rovers, Manchester United and Bolton Wanderers. He also spent two years with Preston North End FC, as well as playing for the Lancashire Football Academy. Later, he went on to play for the England National Futsal Team (five-on-five) in the summer of 2008.
Aside from his playing and coaching experience, both in the U.S. and overseas, Apaloo holds a Football Association (FA) Level 2 Coaching Badge, an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, an NSCAA Level 1 Goalkeeping Certificate and a USSF D License.
Apaloo – who is also an assistant coach for Miami Dade FC of the American Premier Soccer League – will join an FGCU program which beginning in August will be in search of a seventh-straight Atlantic Sun Conference Regular Season Championship. The Eagles, who have already claimed an unprecedented six-straight titles, lost three players to the professional ranks this past offseason, but return a strong core and several talented newcomers in the fall.
"I am fully aware of the strong tradition, high standards and expectations that coach Butehorn has for his program," added Apaloo in reference to FGCU's three ASUN Tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in just five seasons of Division-I postseason eligibility. "I am eager and ready to contribute to the successes of everyone involved in the men's soccer program."
Apaloo graduated from Barry with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management and a minor in Business Management in 2008. He earned his Master of Science in Sports Management from Barry in 2010.
