High Point drops 2-1 road decision at ECU
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The High Point University women's soccer team fell on the road to East Carolina by a score of 2-1 on Thursday night in Greenville, N.C. Freshman Amy Burch scored the lone goal of the game for the Panthers.
“I think we played pretty well tonight," head coach Marty Beall said. "We were fantastic in the first half and did a good job limiting ECU's opportunities. In the second half, we came out a little flat and gave up a second goal. I am proud of the way this team never gives up. After ECU's goal we got back to what we do, kept possession and got a great set piece goal. Now we need to take the positives, move forward and continue to grow.”
East Carolina took an early 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on an own goal and then doubled its lead in the 53rd minute with a goal from Lexi Miller. Miller received a back pass from Kelly Miller and hit a hard shot from 20-yards out that hit off HPU keeper Jesse May's hands into the net.
The Panthers got a goal back in the 67th minute when Burch scored her first collegiate goal off a rebound from a shot by Becca Lisson. Lisson beat her defender and put a header on frame forcing a diving stop from the ECU keeper. The ball fell right to the feet of Burch at the left post and the defender tapped it home to make the score 2-1.
High Point pressed forward looking for the tying goal late with senior Katie Harris and junior Kelli Joline each forcing saves by the ECU keeper.
High Point returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 9, when the team will head to nearby Greensboro, N.C., to face inter-triad rival UNC Greensboro at 2 p.m. The game is one of seven matchups between the two schools across seven sports that together form the HPU/UNCG Challenge. The Panthers are 0-2-0 all-time against UNC Greensboro.
