Hilltoppers lose a heartbreaker to #19 Dustdevils, 2-1
AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Edward’s men’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker on a miscue against #19 Texas A&M-International Sunday afternoon at Lewis-Chen Family Field, 2-1.
St. Edward’s (4-8-4, 2-4-1 HC) started off strong taking the first two shots of the match against Texas A&M-International (10-3-2, 6-0 HC).
In the 18th minute the Dustdevils opened the scoring when they passed the ball off of a free kick to Luis Salas, who sent a low shot in to the far post. This would be the only goal in the first half making the match 1-0 in favor of the Dustdevils at the half.
With fresh legs, St. Edward’s would start the second half off strong when Coleton Stymiest (Freshman, Dallas, Texas) would take a shot in the 45th minute from 15 yards out connecting with the net off of a turnover by the Dustdevil keeper. The assist given to Andrew Fox (Freshman, Cambridge, England).
The Dustdevils answered back in the 49th minute off of a misplay by the Hilltopper keeper, taking back the lead 2-1.
Hilltoppers continued to pressure. Their best chance came in the 69th minute when Fox broke through two defenders sending a rocket straight to the goal; the Dustdevil keeper was there to block the shot.
The Dustdevils outshot the Hilltoppers, 12-9. St. Edward’s had nine cornerkicks compared to just three for Texas A&M-International.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Thursday when they travel to take on West Texas A&M. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Live coverage will be available on the West Texas A&M Athletic Website.
