Hilltoppers tie with #15 Northeastern State, 2-2
TAHLEQUA, Oklahoma – The St. Edward’s men’s soccer played a tough match against #15 Northeastern State Sunday afternoon as they tied 2-2.
St. Edward’s (3-5-3) started off strong in the first half against Northeastern State (7-1-2). In the 16th minute, forward JR Ellis (Junior, Coppell, Texas) scored the first goal of the match off of a rebounded save.
By the end of the first half goalkeeper John Kaschak (Sophomore, Allen, Texas) defended the goal making five saves allowing the Hilltoppers to keep the lead, 1-0.
In the second half, the Hilltoppers continued to pressure the Riverhawks making multiple runs and attacks on goal.
In the 58th minute Riverhawks Bo White scored tying up the match 1-1.
The Riverhawks took the lead in the 60th minute when Sambo Claros scored. Making the match 2-1 in favor of Northeastern State.
The Hilltoppers did not back down but turned up the offensive pressure. In the 68th minute Keston Smith (Junior, Lisas Garden Couva, Trinidad) would chip the ball in from the near post off of an assist from Bryan Booth (Senior, Colleyville, Texas) tying up the match, 2-2. The match would then go into overtime.
In overtime neither team would score leaving the match in a draw. Northeastern State outshot the Hilltoppers, 19-8.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday when they travel to take on Incarnate Word. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas. Live stats will be available on the Incarnate Word Athletic Website.
