Hollenga wins RMAC Offensive Player of the Week for second time in 2011
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Fort Lewis College women’s soccer player Hayley Hollenga was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Sarah Meier announced today.
“Hayley has been a work horse these last few weeks, and she went out and earned the Player of the Week,” said fifth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke.
Hollenga, a 5-foot-7 senior forward from Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, scored the first two goals in both of FLC’s wins last weekend: a 5-0 romp over Adams State on Friday and a 2-1 win over New Mexico Highlands on Sunday. She added an assist in the win against the Grizzlies. She also netted the game-winner in each victory.
Awards are nothing new to Hollenga in 2011. She previously received the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 6, 2011, the RMAC Student-Athlete of the Month for September, RMAC All-Academic first team accolades, and first team Preseason All-RMAC honors. To top it all of, she was named to FLC’s All-Century Team last month — a select group of the 100 top student-athletes, coaches, and administrators in the college’s 100-year history.
Hollenga is the Skyhawks’ career leader in goals (42), assists (30), and total points (114). She was a second team NSCAA All-American in 2010 and has earned numerous All-Central Region, All-RMAC, and Academic All-RMAC awards during her career.
The latest distinction marks the third time she’s received an RMAC Player of the Week honor during her career. She was also listed in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” a year ago and was names to College Soccer 360’s Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll last week.
She currently ranks among RMAC leaders in assists (third, eight), assists per game (third, 0.53), points (fourth, 26), points per game (fourth, 1.73), goals (sixth, nine), and goals per game (sixth, 0.60).
Hollenga is a member of three FLC women’s soccer teams (2007, 2009, 2010) and three FLC women’s basketball teams (2008, 2009, 2010) to qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs. In 2010 alone, she was a member of FLC’s women’s basketball team that finished as national runners-up. Eight months later, she led the Skyhawk women’s soccer squad to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
The Skyhawks (13-1-3 overall, 10-1-2 in the RMAC) can clinch their second straight RMAC regular season crown and earn the right to host the league playoffs with a win or tie at Regis (12-4-0, 9-3-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday. Fort Lewis leads the RMAC with 32 points (three points awarded for each conference win, one for each conference tie), trailed by Regis (27) and Colorado Mines (26). Both the Rangers and Orediggers play two games this week, giving them the opportunity to earn six points in the league standings and either jump ahead or catch FLC.
