Holy Cross Drops 2-1 Contest To Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – With the Crusaders leading 1-0 after the first 45:00 of action, the Pioneers netted two second half goals as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to Sacred Heart, 2-1, on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-3-0 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 3-0-0 overall.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead at 7:17 when junior Josh Cintas (San Diego, Calif.) netted his team-best second goal of the season. The goal was the third of his career. Junior captain Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) posted an assist. The Crusaders outshot the Pioneers by a 4-3 margin for the half.
SHU goalie Tucker Hackett kept the game at 1-0 when he made three saves in the first 17:00 of the second half. At 63:25 the Crusaders were called for a foul in the penalty box as the Pioneers then tied the contest at 1-1 when Marcello Castro scored on the penalty kick. At 69:17, Mahmoud Kafel found the back of the net for the game-winner. The Pioneers were able to keep the lead and earn the win as Hackett made two saves after the Pioneers' second goal including a save on a shot by Cintas with just 1:43 remaining in the second half. The Crusaders then had a corner kick with 10 seconds left but were unable to find the back of the net for the 2-1 final score.
Sophomore goalie Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) made two saves, while Hackett posted six saves to earn the win and improve to 3-0-0 on the season. Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart, 12-10, while HC took seven shots on goal and SHU posted four. The Crusaders tallied five corner kicks and the Pioneers had three.
The Crusaders return to action when they play at home versus Bryant at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.
