Holy Cross Men's Soccer Shutout, 2-0, Against Patriot League For Lafayette
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s soccer team accumulated 11 shots but could not find the back of the net, falling 2-0 against Lafayette at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the decision, Holy Cross moves to a record of 1-7-2 (0-2-0 Patriot League) on the season while the Leopards go to 5-2-2 (1-0-1 PL). Sophomore Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) had a team-high three shots in the game, all coming in the second half.
The Leopards scored their two goals in the first half, coming at the 9:27and 34:15 marks. Both goals were scored off close shots inside the box. The Crusaders put together five shot attempts in the front half including shots on-goal by senior Joey Curran (Salem, Va.) and sophomore Tommy Uttaro (Staten Island, N.Y.). Freshman netminder Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) made three saves in the first 45 minutes as well.
The two offenses played a stalemate second half as neither team would connect for a goal. Each squad took an even six shots as well. Thompson made one save whileLafayettegoalkeeper, Graham Heydt, made two saves. The Crusaders finished the game down, 2-0, dropping their second straight Patriot League game.
Thompson finished with the losing decision, going to1-5-2on the season after making a total of four saves in the game. Heydt finished the game with an equal four saves and collects a record of3-2-2. He also earned his fourth shutout of the season. The Leopards totaled 14 shots, including six on-goal while the Crusaders had the 11 total shooting opportunities, including four on-goal.
Holy Cross continues Patriot League action next weekend, hosting Colgate on Saturday, Oct. 8. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium in Worcester, Mass.
