Holy Cross Opens With 3-0 Win Over Siena
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Holy Cross used three goals from junior Annie Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.), and freshmen Aly Spencer (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Caitlin Harty (Beverly, Mass.) to help lead it to a 3-0 victory over Siena in non-conference women’s soccer action on Friday afternoon at Siena Field. With the win, the Crusaders open the regular season with a 1-0 record, while the Saints begin the campaign at 0-1.
The Crusaders tallied the game’s first goal in the seventh minute, as Spencer gathered a Siena turnover and ripped a shot from the top of the box for the 1-0 lead (6:54). Holy Cross gained the 2-0 advantage just before the end of the first half (42:20). On a two-on-two situation, George fed a through ball to Harty in the middle of the field, who launched a shot inside the left post behind the Siena goalie. The goals and assist by the trio of freshmen were the first of their respective careers.
Siena began the second half with a pair of shots on net in the 47th and 49th minutes, but Holy Cross senior goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) pushed aside both chances. The Saints added one more shot on goal in the 58th minute, but McCabe once again came up with the stop. Galvin notched the third goal of the contest in the 87th minute, as she dribbled in from the left side and drove the shot under the crossbar.
McCabe (1-0-0) made three saves in the contest to pick up the shutout victory, while Siena keeper Taylor Booth (0-1-0) made two stops in the loss. The shutout by McCabe was the 11th of her career which ranks fifth all-time in Holy Cross history. She stands one behind Sarah Porell for fourth place in the record book.
The Crusaders held advantages in both total shots (14-10) and shots on goal (5-3), while Siena led in corner kicks (8-2).
Holy Cross returns to action on Monday, Aug. 25, when it will host its home opener versus LIU Brooklyn at 1:05 p.m. on the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The game will be broadcasted live on Crusader Vision.
