BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Hoosiers opened the 2012 season with a 6-3 exhibition win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday night at Armstrong Stadium. Freshman Jessie Bujouves scored three goals to lead the offense while all three goalkeepers saw time in the frame for Indiana.

The teams played three 30-minute periods instead of the customary 45 minute halves.

“I thought the team really came out and did a great job of executing some of the new things we are doing with our formation,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “Once we settled down, it really came together for us and will be able to take a lot of positives from this game.”

Indiana racked up 24 shots to 11 for NKU and IU goalkeepers had to make just two saves in the contest.

The Norse got on the scoreboard first less than six minutes into the contest as the IU defense misplayed the ball deep in its own zone and Allison Ponzer drilled one into the wide open goal. The Hoosiers were not able to get on the board in the first period despite outshooting NKU, 5-3, and drawing five corner kicks.

Things quickly changed in the second period when Abby Smith took a pass from Bujouves in the middle of the box right in front of the goal and drilled a shot inside the left post to tie the game at 1-1. Less than four minutes later, Bujouves took matters into her own hands as she found a loose ball in the box and drilled one into the upper third to put IU out front, 2-1.

Then with 10 minutes left in the second period, Bujouves found a rebound that got away from the NKU keeper on a shot by Lisa Nouanesengsy and touched it across the line from point blank range for the third IU goal of the night. Nouanesengsy followed it up four minutes later took a pass from freshman Meghan Wiles in the penalty shot area and juked the NKU defender and her shot to the far post was true to give Indiana a 5-1 lead.

In the third and final period, the Norse struck twice to cut the IU lead to 5-3 but Candler was able to corral a free kick from Molly Buynak into the box and touched it past the NKU keeper before she could get her hands on it.

Indiana will open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 17, at home against Arkansas State starting at 7:30 p.m. The Hoosiers then host Ohio University on Sunday, Aug. 19, with the kickoff slated for 2:00 p.m. Follow IUWS on Twitter at twitter.com/IUWSoccer or find them on Facebook at facebook.com/iuwomenssoccer.
