Hope Defeats Alma 4-1 In MIAA Men's Soccer
Two-goal games from Josh Hagene and Jason Muller fueled the Hope men's soccer team to a 4-1 win against Alma at a rain-soaked Van Andel Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.
The Flying Dutchmen (9-3-1 overall) stayed in second place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) with a 5-2 record.
Hope hosts MIAA-leading Calvin on Tuesday.
Hagene, a freshman from Caledonia (East Kentwood HS), opened the scoring with 1:02 remaining in the first half on a blast from 24 yards out. The Flying Dutchmen led 1-0 at halftime.
Muller, who leads Hope with eight goals this season, blasted an unassisted goal from 35 yards out in the 53rd minute for a 2-1 lead. The senior from Petoskey (Petoskey HS) scored 5 ½ minutes after Alma (7-4, 3-4) pulled even.
Muller tacked on a goal in the 67th minute, while Hagene finished the scoring in the 79thminute. Junior midfielder Gavin Midlam assisted on Hagene's second goal.
Sophomore goalie Ethan Beswick of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) made five saves for Hope.
