Hope Men's Soccer Blanks Madonna 2-0 At Home
The Hope College men's soccer team scored two second-half goals to beat Madonna University 2-0 on Wednesday night.
The Flying Dutchmen evened their overall record at 1-1-1 with the nonleague win in front of a Van Andel Soccer Stadium crowd of 350.
Sophomore David Porte, pictured at right, snapped a scoreless tie in the 72nd minute. The midfielder/ forward from Mattawan (Mattawan HS) headed a long cross in the corner from junior midfielder Tarwo Konbloa for his first
collegiate goal.
"That was just a scramble play," Porte said. "Tarwo had a little combination play with another forward, and served the ball up. It looked like it was going to go out of bounds — I think's what all the team thought. I was like 'I think it's going to stay inbounds.' I started running toward it, threw my body at it. I didn't even know it went in (until) I started hearing everybody cheering."
Six minutes later, junior Gavin Midlam of East Lansing (East Lansing HS) swiped possession from Madonna, then dribbled a few feet before finishing from 12 yards out. It was Midlam's second goal of the season.
"It's really frustrating when you're dominating a team, and you don't get a goal out of it," Porte said. "As soon as we got that first one, we were able to sit back and start actually enjoying the game then put away another one."
Junior goalie Will Morlock of Grand Haven (Grand Haven HS) earned his first win for the Flying Dutchmen by posting three saves.
The Flying Dutchmen return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7, when they host Wheaton (Ill.) College. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
