Hopkins, Shamburger Receive Weekly Honors
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt standouts Haley Hopkins and Ella Shamburger headlined SEC Player of the Week honors, the league announced Tuesday. Hopkins was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, with Shamburger earning Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Playing in her native California, Hopkins led the ninth-ranked Commodores to back-to-back 1-0 victories over UC Irvine and No. 22 Pepperdine. She provided the only offense in both games, scoring early in the second half against UC Irvine, and then in the 86th minute against Pepperdine.
Both game-winners came one season after she tied for fifth in the SEC with five game-winning goals.
Hopkins has six goals in four games to start the campaign and has scored in each game on the season. She has also scored in six straight games dating to 2018.
Shamburger, who played all 90 minutes and started both games this past weekend at center back, also aided a Vanderbilt defense that did not allow a goal over the two-match stretch. The Dores only allowed eight shots and kept their season-long shutout streak intact.
Vanderbilt returns to Nashville this weekend to host the Music City Invitational. The Commodores will receive visits from Colgate (Friday at 7:30 p.m. CT) and Marshall (Sunday at 2:30 p.m.). Both games are free to all fans and will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
