Lady Hornets blank Grambling State
GRAMBLING, LA. – Twos were wild for the Alabama State women's soccer team as the Lady Hornets blanked Grambling State 1-0 for their second consecutive conference victory on Friday at the GSU Soccer Complex.
The Lady Hornets (2-7-1, 2-0 SWAC) made it two straight matches with both a game-winning goal and a shutout to preserve the victory.
Junior forward Kayla Edwards got ASU on the board first in the 23rd minute on a cross to the middle of the field from freshman Mooregan Elder.
It would stand up as the Lady Hornets' defense and goalkeeper Gianna Guyot were up to task in stopping the Lady Tigers' offense.
ASU held possession for the majority of the match with an 18-7 shots advantage and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
Edwards scored her second goal in the last three matches and picked up her second career winner at ASU.
It was the 10th career goal for the All-SWAC Second Team Preseason selection.
Elder got forward in the attack and was able to notch her second assist of the season, a good connecting pass that got Edwards one-on-one with Lady Tigers' keeper Jennifer LeSage.
Guyot made three saves to collect back-to-back shutouts.
Shorthanded Alabama State was without their top two scorers Aaliyah Lewis and twin sister Ariela Lewis.
Both players served the first of a two-match suspension for receiving red cards in a match against Howard last Friday.
"It was a team win with a limited roster," said Alabama State women's soccer coach Jodie Smith.
"We found a way to win. When you go on the road and pick up three big points without a full roster due to suspensions, it's definitely something to be proud of. I was really pleased with our work rate and willingness to defend as a team. That was the difference today."
The Lady Tigers dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 inside the SWAC.
Alabama State will continue the road swing with a match at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at 1 p.m.
