Hornets Fall 1-0 to UMBC in Exhibition
(Dover, Del.) – Sunday afternoon, the Delaware State women’s soccer team (0-1) came up short to the visiting UMBC Retrievers (1-0), 1-0, in what was the Hornets’ first exhibition match of the season.
In the first half, no score, DSU had a chance to get on the board during the 18th minute when midfielder Julia Bossert made a pass to last season’s leading scorer,Taylor Addison, deep in UMBC territory. With two defenders draped on her back, Addison was able to get a shot off, yet goalkeeper Lauren Kadet was there for the save.
Later in the period, the Retrievers caught a break during the 30th minute when Delaware State committed a foul inside its box to put UMBC in a penalty kicking situation. With junior Katelyn Koslosky in the net for DSU, UMBC put it past her for the first and only score of the match.
Meanwhile, the Hornets did not go down without a fight, as the Retrievers pushed to extend their lead in the second half. Nevertheless, DSU’s defense held steady, led by Koslosky tallying two out of her four saves throughout Sunday’s match.
Offensively, DSU’s Taylor Pratcher nearly tied the game during the 63rd minute when she controlled the ball near UMBC’s net. Surrounded by multiple Retriever defenders, Pratcher was able to get a shot off, but her attempt was blocked and later controlled by Kadet.
At game’s end, the Retrievers placed five shots on-goal, while DSU came away with one.
Coming up next, the Hornets will open up the regular season next Sunday at home (1 p.m.) against the Temple Owls.
