Hot Start Sends Saints Past Cornell
LOUDONVILLE, NY – Darby D’Angelo and Carrie Krohn each scored first half goals to lead Siena Women’s Soccer past Cornell 2-1 at Siena Field. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Dorado made a pair of saves for the Saints which improved to 35-7-2 (.818) in home non-conference action spanning the past 11 years.
Siena (3-1-1) withstood an early second half goal from Cornell (1-2) to earn their first-ever win over the Big Red in four tries. The Saints held a 13-6 advantage in shots, and a 6-3 margin in corners.
Nifty passing led Siena to each of its two tallies, coming courtesy of a pair of first-time goal scorers in 2018. Six different players have now accounted for the team’s first six goals over the opening five matches of the season.
In the 13th minute, Meghan Riccardi sent a cross from the right into the box to Jayanna Monds, who turned and played the ball out to a hard-charging D’Angelo at the top of the 18. The sophomore ran onto the feed and one-timed her third career goal inside the right post.
Krohn added what would ultimately prove to be the game-winning score with her first collegiate goal in the 38th minute. Haleigh Schanz delivered a ball to Gabby Albano who one-touched in Krohn down the left side. The freshman broke free and finished across inside the right post to give the Saints momentum heading into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
Cornell halved its deficit just over five minutes into the second half on a strike from Aidan Julia Reineman, but couldn’t get any closer as Siena controlled play down the stretch.
Meghan Kennedy made all four of her saves in the second half for the Big Red.
After playing its first match in eight days, the Saints continue a stretch of three contests spanning just six days when they rekindle their rivalry with crosstown foe UAlbany Thursday at Siena Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
