EMMITSBURG, Md. – The High Point University women's soccer team scored two goals in two minutes to pick up a 2-1 win over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Md.
"Overall I was proud of the way the team responded after giving up an early goal," head coach Marty Beall said. "We definitely need to spend a lot more time on finishing. We created numerous chances and we need to do a better job in front of goal. The fact that we didn't play our best soccer this weekend but we battled through and got results speaks to the character of the team."
The Panthers improved to 2-0-2 for the season with the win over the Mount, matching the start to the 2014 season for the best record to start a season in program history. Mount St. Mary's fell to 0-4-0 on the season.
High Point controlled play early, putting up four shots in the opening three minutes but it was Mount St. Mary's that took the early lead with a goal by Emma Blair against the run of play in the sixth minute.
The Panthers tied the game in the 27th minute when sophomore Bri Jean-Charles scored from just in front of goal off a free kick by sophomore Taylor Romano. Redshirt-sophomore Bailey Beattie then put HPU in the lead just two minutes later with a lofted shot to the upper right corner over the keeper from 25-yards out on the left flank. Sophomore Annie Redovian set Beattie free with a ball up the left side for the assist.
HPU peppered the Mount St. Mary's goal throughout the match, putting up 21 shots and six shots on goal on the day. The Mountaineers put up 11 shots and six on goal in the game. The Panthers also ended the game with an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Emily Lyon made five saves in her collegiate debut to pick up her first win in an HPU uniform. Quinn Costello-Mays suffered the loss in goal for Mount St. Mary's after giving up two goals and making one save in one half of work.
High Point returns home next weekend when the team will host Stetson and North Florida. The Panthers will welcome Stetson to Vert Stadium on Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
