Hudnut, Covenant Roll Over Hawks
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- After receiving a tough loss on Tuesday night, the Covenant Scots hit the field again on Saturday night and came away with a decisive 2-0 win over Great South Athletic Conference foe Huntingdon College at Scotland Yard.
The win is Covenant’s fifth in its last six matches and puts the Scots at 7-7-2 and 3-0 in conference action. More importantly, Covenant now has a chance to win the GSAC outright on Monday night against Maryville College. Huntingdon is now 3-10-2 and 1-2 in GSAC play.
Covenant had possession for most of the match as they attempted 21 shots, opposed to only three for the visiting Hawks. But it was back-to-back shots from Matt Hudnut that resulted in goals late in the first period.
Hudnut got the scoring going in the 42nd minute with a score from roughly 30 yards out as he rifled it past Hawks keeper Jordan Osborne, his third goal of the season. Moments later, in the 44th minute, Hudnut came up with a loose ball in the box and maneuvered through Huntingdon defenders and scored from close range by tapping the ball past Osborne for his second goal of the night and his fourth of the year.
Those two scores were all Covenant needed on the night. Huntingdon attempted just one shot on goal which came in the 31st minute from Dallas Thomas, but Covenant keeper John Eger was there for his 77th save of the season.
The Scots had eight shots on goal, but Osborne was there for the save six times to keep the Hawks in the game. Covenant also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The win sets up a matchup with Maryville College (11-4-2, 3-0 GSAC) on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at Scotland Yard. With a win, Covenant will clinch the GSAC regular season title.
